Non-Profits
501-(c)3s or nonprofit organizations are now the third-largest U.S. employer, so it's clear this industry does not sit outside racial capitalism. So, how do we understand the role that it plays in this system? 501(c)(3) and non-governmental organizations are essential to maintaining the neocolonial position of Afrikan people in the U.S. and internationally, the settler position of European people, and a critical tool of the capital class in its fight against socialism. No housing? A nonprofit will struggle to provide x number of units. Unsafe communities? A non-profit will offer a drop-in center for young people. A desire for arts and culture activities in our neighborhoods and downtown? You get our drift.
501 (c) (3)s facilitate the accumulation of vast sums of capital, e.g. labor, buildings, and cash by normalizing the idea that public need should be met by a variety of private strategies since nonprofits are private companies with very little accountability to the public. Additionally, it allows the capital class to deduct taxes while leveraging this money to achieve their objectives, whether it be school reform, land use, economic development, or aesthetic hierarchies. And yet they are stilla major place of employment and so can be a site of struggle, if we choose to engage them in this way.
